Why is ART so expensive?

Black Suprematist square.

The work of Kazimir Malevich, created in 1915, is one of the most discussed and most famous paintings in world art.

"Black Square" is part of a cycle of Suprematist works by Kazimir Malevich, in which the artist explored the basic possibilities of color and composition; is, by design, part of the triptych, which also includes the "Black Circle" and "Black Cross".

Malevich’s paintings look like geometric shapes on the wall, although for the artist himself it was a new religion. Malevich is not the first to paint the canvas in black. For example

The Great Darkness of Robert Fludd 1617

"Night fight of blacks in the basement" 1882

"The battle of blacks in a cave in the dead of night" 1883

Malevich’s originality is the lack of a plot. There is a religious connotation in the great darkness, and the rest are simply frivolous works. His painting is called what it is.

As an artist, he possessed good technique and consciously abandoned it. And this is the first thing that makes the picture so expensive

In the 20th century, revolution was everywhere. In art, too, a revolution was brewing. In 1913, the first All-Russian Congress of Futurists took place, at which only 3 people met. Composer Mikhail Matyushin, Malevich and poet Aleksey Kruchenokh. They coined the term BUDETLYANA — there will be a future, from the word futurists. Their goal was to destroy unfit art and create a new one. The first thing they did was their own opera VICTORY OVER THE SUN. SUPREMATISM was born, which is struggling to escape from nature. 2 years later, the first exhibition of Suprematism took place, which was called 010. There were 39 paintings. When people went into the hall, they saw only geometric paintings. And in the corner near the ceiling, where the icon is usually hung, was MALEVICH'S BLACK SQUARE.

Pure black is almost never found in nature. Black is the lack of light. Thus, Malevich began art from scratch.

Today it is one of the most expensive paintings in general.

4. The fate of the artist.

Since the 30s, Malevich and the state had very tense relations. The authorities wanted realistic works, and the artist’s paintings didn’t correspond to this. He was twice arrested on charges of anti-government activities, but released when protests were sent to the USSR government supposedly let Malevich go, foreigners complained. For the exhibition of 1832, Malevich writes the last 4th version of the black square.

5. The artist’s picture participated in his funeral. A black square hung on the wall above the head of the coffin in Leningrad. The artist’s body was covered with white canvas with a black square sewn on it. The painting was also on the roof of the coffin from the side of the head. He was carrying a truck with a black square on the hood. A black square was painted on the carriage of a train carrying Malevich’s body to Moscow. A white wooden cube with a black square was placed over his grave. According to his will, Malevich was buried in the forest. Thus, he returned to the original idea of the creation and creation of nature itself.

Black Square has become a legend. Malevich created a new religion, urged people to abandon the old faith, look at the world differently.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the old world and the old religion collapsed. Propaganda spoke of a bright future in which everyone would be equal and happy. But people saw hunger, war, boundless blackness and the unknownness of space. Malevich’s black square turned into a prophecy in this context. It turned into symbol of a new religion in which there was no room for God.
